Weekend preview: Leap Day, two date ideas and some three-dog nights

Saturday is Feb. 29. That is a duh-dull sentence, until you realize it has not been written since 1992, the most recent instance of Leap Day falling on a Saturday.

Leap Day is an accounting adjustment, to square the Gregorian calendar with the orbital mechanics of the Earth’s passage around the sun. But depending on how you think of space and time, it’s a gift of an extra day in life. By a quirk in the science of these things, 2020 also will include a leap second, making it one of the longest years in your existence.

But how to spend this extra Saturday? A few hours helping to repair humanity, of course. In my house, I am trying to drum up support for a day without phones and social media. And I do that knowing Miller Lite is giving away a 24-pack via a QR code posted Saturday on their Twitter and Instagram. And that it’s also the day Krispy Kreme begins delivering fresh doughnuts via DoorDash.

Here are some other ways to make use of your time on Saturday and beyond:

The Truman show

American Social in downtown Fort Lauderdale on Saturday will revive its homage to the legendary 1966 Black and White Ball (“the Best Party Ever,” said the New York Times) thrown by Truman Capote, who somehow succeeded in making this celebrity hothouse a cell phone-free zone. In hosting “a party so big it can only be thrown once every four years,” AmSo wants you in formalish black and/or white attire (tip: some in Capote’s crowd wore masks), and in return there will be free champagne from 9 to 11 p.m. Visit AmericanSocialBar.com.

Come as you are

Speaking of period dress, the Battle of the Decades party at Elizabeth Ave. Station in West Palm Beach 7 p.m. Saturday will feature bands covering music from the 1960s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and the ’00s, and they hope you come dressed as your favorite decade. Admission is $10, and includes unlimited beer and wine. Kids 12 and younger get in free. Visit TheStationWPB.com.

Walking the dog

From the Of Course! Dept. comes the Fort Lauderdale Bark Walk, a dog-friendly art walk hosted by Rank & File Social Club in Fort Lauderdale’s Flagler Village 6 p.m. Saturday. Coinciding with the monthly downtown Art Walk that takes over the nearby MASS District and FAT Village, the Bark Walk will combine displays from local artists with dog-oriented vendors. Visit Facebook.com/RankAndFileSC.

In a related note, you can get an early start on Saturday at 2 p.m. with the dog-centric Bark & Brews, hosted by Wonder Paws Rescue at Fort Lauderdale‘s Gulf Stream Brewing Co. Visit Facebook.com/GulfStreamBrewing.

Leap beers

Due South Brewing in Boynton Beach will have four versions of its iconic Mariana Trench Imperial Stout on tap Saturday for Leap Day festivities.

Bangin’ Banjo Brewing Co. in Pompano Beach will celebrate at noon Saturday by offering a free pint to anyone born on Feb. 29, which will force me to ask my son where he gets his fake IDs these days. Visit Facebook.com/BanginBanjoBrewing.

OK, not just beer, but Broski Ciderworks in Pompano Beach will celebrate its third anniversary 1 p.m. Saturday with a lineup of 30 of its most popular ciders, including five that have won awards at the two most recent U.S. Cider Open Championships. The party will include craft beers, food trucks (Kaminari Ramen and Tony Waffles), games and more. Visit BroskiCiderworks.com.

Mary Karlzen is back

Singer-songwriter Mary Karlzen‘s early ’90s work with Miami label Y&T led to a critically lauded Atlantic Records album, “Yelling at Mary,” music videos in regular rotation on VH1, CMT and the Nashville Network and performances on bills with Bob Dylan, John Hiatt, Jackson Browne, Nanci Griffith and others. Karlzen is working on her first studio album since 2007’s “The Wanderlust Diaries” and will share new songs in an intimate show 7-11 p.m. Sunday at the House, a nonprofit creative space and café in North Miami Beach. Other expected performers include Jansen Press, Jolynn Daniel, Mitch Mestel, Mike Vullo, Matthew Sabatella and Jim Wurster. To RSVP, email ytmusic1@aol.com. Visit Facebook.com/121TheMuse.

Kindred spirit Karen Feldner will be joined by Sabatella and Mr. Entertainment and the Pookiesmackers at the organic café Zen Mystery in Dania Beach on Saturday at 8 p.m. when she will perform music from her “Winter” collection. Perfect timing. Visit ZenMystery.com.

Lowen is back, too

Plantation-raised singer-songwriter Emily Kopp, now based in Nashville, has tried on a new persona for the tour stopping on Thursday (Feb. 27) at the Floyd in Miami. Performing as Lowen, an artist distinct from Emily, allows her to more easily share the emotion-laden music on her new EP, “Only in My Dreams,” a collection inspired by euphoric love and tragic loss. Tickets cost $15-$18. Hit the link for an interview with Lowen about her music and the show.

A shot of Brandi

While I’m thinking of it, just a reminder that extraordinary singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile (“The Joke,” “The Eye”) plays Hard Rock Live in Hollywood on March 6, a thoughtful booking in this flashy new venue that needs to be encouraged. Tickets can still be had, beginning at $21.50. Visit Ticketmaster.com.

Date night

Friday brings the final edition of the free Lake Worth Bonfire series on the sand adjacent to the Lake Worth Casino Building and Beach Complex, with music by the People Upstairs and blanket and cooler by you. Bring two blankets or three dogs, with temperatures on Friday night possibly getting into the 40s. The event runs from 6 to 10 p.m. Visit Facebook.com/LakeWorthCasino.

Burger of the week

My daughter plays a lot of volleyball in Deerfield Beach, which I am fine with since I discovered, just around the corner at 1101 S. Powerline Road, Tucker Duke’s Lunchbox and its formidable Spicy Lola burger. In fact the last time I was there, it had nothing to do with volleyball. I just went. Stacked with a half-pound patty, English cheddar cheese, bacon, red onion confit, potato sticks, jalapeño jam, tomato and a green fringe spring mix, the Spicy Lola goes down with a warm tingle on the tongue. It clearly requires two steady hands to subdue, and even then it feels like the burger may win. It’s like wrestling Jennifer Lopez — or her alter ego, Lola. It’s work, but not unpleasant. The Spicy Lola costs $14. Recommended pairing from Tucker Duke’s thoughtful beer menu: the piney Daycation IPA from Asheville’s Highland Brewing Co. ($5). Visit TuckerDukes.com.

Behold, the Spicy Lola burger at Tucker Duke's in Deerfield Beach (and Boca Raton). Resistance is futile.

Future laughs

Comedian, UFC commentator and podcast star Joe Rogan will bring his Sacred Clown Tour to the big house, the BB&T Center in Sunrise, on Aug. 13. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday via Ticketmaster.com, with a series of presales happening now. For information, visit JoeRogan.com.

Date night II

The Art After Dark series 5-10 p.m. every Friday at the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach is an invigorating night out, with free admission and drinks and dinner available in The Restaurant. This week’s installment is highlighted by Norton curator of photography Tim B. Wride discussing the new Norton exhibit (opening Friday) dedicated to the “Rudin Prize for Emerging Photographers” at 6 p.m. and an 8 p.m. performance by Gold Dust Lounge, whose cinematic menace would be the perfect soundtrack for a slide show of Weegee’s street photography. The GDL show will be in the Goergen Garden, so bring a couple of blankets. Looking ahead, the Norton will kick off Women’s History Month with a free block party noon-5 p.m. March 7 that includes another favorite South Florida band, Las Nubes. Visit Norton.org.
